Interviews Part 2 – What you should and shouldn’t do

You look the part, now on to the interview.

There are plenty of things you should and shouldn’t say or do. These are our top 10.

Don’t

  1. Be late
This will give the employer the impression of your future timing should they choose to employ you.
Whatever your reason, if you know you are going to be late then call ahead to let the interviewer know so alternative arrangements can be made
  2. Lie
When asked, be honest in your answers. You will only get caught out later on, reflecting badly on you
  3. Bad mouth previous employers
If you have negative opinions of your previous employer we are not encouraging you to lie and make them sound like they were perfect. Be diplomatic in your responses
  4. Appear to be focussed solely on the salary and benefits
Discuss these once the job has been offered
  5. Discuss controversial topics such as politics, religion etc
  6. Argue with the interviewer
  7. Language: No swearing
  8. Chew gum in the interview
  9. Slouch or appear uninterested in the job
  10. Answer phone calls during the interview

Do

  1. Arrive about 10-15 minutes early
  2. If you don’t already know, find out beforehand what type of interview it will be. In a group or one-to-one
  3. Greet the interviewer with a smile and a firm handshake
  4. Have extra copies of your CV
Make your CV accessible online or on a USB stick in case you forget to bring extra copies
  5. Prepare some questions to ask the interviewer
Use this opportunity to ask more questions about the role and the company
  6. Take your time answering questions, using examples

  8. Ask when the company expects to make their decision by
  9. Be prepared with knowledge of the company
  10. Focus on your strengths using relevant examples

Interviews can be stressful and nerve wracking. Take a few moments to calm down. Remember to be yourself, companies will be interested in someone who fits them, not a robot.
