Every industry has to have its own language of fanciful buzz words and the technology world is no different.
There were so many buzz words worthy of our list but alas we had to whittle them down to a few.
This buzz word has been flying around a lot! But what is it? Big data refers to how we collect and sift through the large amounts of information that is now at our disposal, whether it is through the way we listen to music, communicate with each other, social media etc.
Cloud computing seems to be all the rage for now, but do you what it is? In short it is a way of connecting a number of different computers together through, wait for it…the internet. This enable users to store more data onto the virtual fluffy white cloud reducing the need for physical storage space in the form of servers. Making information easily accessible from any computer. Any sane person / business are not going to want their sensitive information viewed by the entire virtual world. Hence the use of vendors such as Google and Microsoft Windows Azure.
Even though it could be, this isn’t something out of Star Trek. This refers to data that is sitting in the virtual corner gathering dust, this could be because its creators didn’t know what to do with it at the time, have forgotten about it or both. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a spring clean every so often, dust off those megabytes and see what business opportunities could be hiding. If it turns out the ‘hidden treasures’ were not that precious then they are simply clogging up your storage space and need to encouraged to go into the light and cross over to the other virtual world where all the deleted data ends up.
Have to admit this is a new one for us. One simple, yet fun to say word that refers to a software bug that seems to disappear or alter its behaviour when it is investigated. It all sounds a bit like ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ The word itself is a ‘ … pun on the name of Werner Heisenberg, the physicist who first asserted the observer effect of quantum mechanics, which states that the act of observing a system inevitably alters its state.’
The next big thing
Why oh why does this phrase get bounced around so much. There is always going to be ‘the next big thing’, that’s how technology evolves and we end up with Google Glass. What happens to all the previous ‘next big things’? Are the previous next big things made to feel any less important? Without them the next, next big thing would not have even been created.
Moving forward, the next big thing could be the almost mind reading robot.
